A sticky brown/yellow substance secreted by the glands lining the ear canal. Ear wax helps protect the ear from possible damage that can be caused by dust, dirt, and harmful microorganisms.
Microsuction is when ear wax is removed with gentle suction using a low-pressure medical grade suction machine and sterile probe under the direct view of an ENT grade microscope.
If possible, ear wax should be softened with oil or softening spray available from your local chemist or from Your Ears. This should be done at least 1-2 weeks prior to your appointment
Approximately 20-30 mins depending on how much wax is in the ear. Occasionally, further appointments may be required due to the level of blockage; your specialist will notify you during the appointment.
Most people’s ears clean themselves and it is not necessary to have them cleaned professionally. For people who experience a build-up of ear wax there is not fixed period to have it removed. Ear wax should only be cleaned if you are experiencing problems. Otherwise it should be left alone.
Sudden or partial hearing loss, which is temporary
